My husband is waiting for his tax rebate after going through an accountant - all his colleagues had got theres, so he rang them.
He was told his rebate is there (£3000) but it's on hold as he owes the taxman £488 from 2011/12.
He got a rebate last year no problem through his accountant so wasn't sure what was wrong.
They say he earned £3023 between April and end of July in his job (weekend work mainly) and paid only £116 tax.
We have checked his wage slips and it shows some weeks he paid tax and some weeks he was refunded tax (we're not sure why) and overall in that job he did pay £116 tax after earning £3023 ... so they seem to be asking for this refunded tax back.
Sorry if this is not making sense, we don't understand ourselves ...
(Also, they seem to want the £488 paying before they'll release his £3000 and won't just deduct it whilst we sort it)
