Had a knock at the door from a scary guy from DMB who gave me a letter saying my OH has to pay HMRC £6,271 in full asap or there will be court action.
His business has not been going well so he hasn't been able to pay his tax. I won't bore you with the ins and outs but we haven't got this £6,000 obviously. We have a disabled daughter and OH has had to take a lot of time off to help with her lately.
We opened some letters that he hasn't been able to face (stupid I know) and they say his whole account is more like £12,000.
Why are they only coming after us for £6,000 ish? Why not all of it? Are they planning to do it in two halves so they don't have to bankrupt us?
I have done a full on budget of everything and I think if we did a lot of belt tightening we could afford to pay them £300 a month. Are they likely to accept this? It won't clear it in a year, not even the £6000, and I keep reading that this is all they will accept.
I spoke to someone at StepChange and he recommended offering it and paying it anyway even if they refuse. He said they wouldn't likely take it any further if we were paying something.
Then we found the other letter and spoke to someone else there who said they couldn't advise on Tax problems so wouldn't help us any more.
I don't know what to do, can someone help us please? Thank you.
