Wasn't sure where to put this!
This is my first time doing a self-assessment tax return. I'm a teacher and do some private tuition at the weekends.
I was always planning on doing it online, as all my records are stored on computer anyway. I got a reminder letter at the end of December advising that I needed to sign up for a Government Gateway ID and that it can take up to 7 working days.
I registered for it at the start of January but haven't heard anything back. Obviously we're more than 7 working days now, but the deadline is looming.
If the 31st January passes and I haven't received this information, am I still liable for the automatic £100 penalty?

My friend and her husband live abroad and rent out a flat in UK. She has never had a tax return despite contacting HMRC about being non resident and renting a property. Her husband has had one and did not send it in on time so has got a penalty. Because my friend didn't get a form, he stupidly thought he didn't have to fill one in either! Anyway he has filled it in now - but she is worried she'll be in trouble for not filling a tax return in. Do HMRC issue returns for old years, should she get in touch with them about it or not.

When I was working for a temping agency (one of two that I worked for PAYE) in tax year 13-14, my pay with them was £8395.91 and I had a tax code of 944L with tax of £443.40.
On my self assessment return I stated the above as this is what it said on the P45 I was issued with by them. Seemed a logical enough assumption that the figure on my P45 should be the figure I use in my return.
Then they say "However, the figures on the P14 (not a document I've EVER seen before from anyone I've worked for) shows Pay of £6016.56 with the same tax code and tax of £440.20.
They go on to say in their letter to me that "If I believe the figures on the P45 are correct, contact that agency and ask them for an amended P15". So I thought ok, that's what I'll do but then the next paragraph creates just more confusion. They say:
"I have reviewed your claim of Employer Error and determined that there was no employer error. None of your employers operated a tax code which wasn't issued to them. The onus is on the taxpayer to check their PAYE code from their payslips and ensure that they are not receiving too many tax free allowances - which was the case in this instance".
I thought what codes were issued to an employer were chosen by the employer - aren't they? - don't they refer to tables and they know which code to apply?
How can the tax bill for me that I STILL have to pay on top of what I've paid already, be £1224.60 and is due by 31 January??? And they've took so long dealing with my enquiry that I'm supposed to pay it by Saturday!!!!!
Are they saying that the PAYE code WAS actually right and the outstanding tax bill is also right????
If it helps, this is the breakdown of my earnings in that tax year:
Total ALL income 24719.26
Total PAYE 20969.26
PAYE as agency worker 10775.26 (that includes the figures I'm speaking of)
Total Self Employed 3750.00
Can anyone who's especially good at this kind of working out give me a heads up - if I owe it then absolutely, no issue, but if it's because of a PAYE issue I can't see how it's something that's within my control??? I wouldn't mind but i was SO careful to calculate and set aside the right amount of tax for my self employed period, and now the PAYE which I've had no reason to believe was wrong, is now jumping up to bite me in the rear!
By the way, just checked the self assessment website and can confirm it has the £122.46 as a balancing payment that's due 31 Jan. If I recall correctly, I already paid £611.30 tax.
I'd really appreciate some help so that I can go back to them with the appropriate response. Thanks everyone.

Hi
I'm completing 2013/14 self assessment and wanted advice on CGT section.
I sold property in Jan 2014, it was my main residence from May 1999 until Aug 2011 and then let until sale. Pretty sure I'm not liable for CGT with Private Residence Relief but can't see where I include this detail on SA form?
Wasted the past two hours trying to get through to HMRC, so any advice appreciated.

Hello!
I've been self employed for about a thousand years, and been doing by own tax return for about 4 years now. I submitted it last Friday, it was successful, I got the submission receipt reference number, all seemed well. Then I logged in today, on the offchance that the payment details would be updated and I could pay today, and it says:
Section Skipped
You must complete the sections up to '4. Fill in your return' in order. After '4. Fill in your return' you can skip any section using the left hand navigation links.
Thing is, I've been through this with a fine toothcomb, including nearly 2 hours on the phone being talked through it by HMRC staff. Anybody come across anything like this before?

Hi,
As a sole trader with low income from self-employment, in my last tax return 2012/13 I estimated my business expenses at £4 a week, which I was advised ought to be acceptable to HMRC without supporting evidence. (Source: BIM47825 but I was told the allowable figure had risen to £4 just not updated in the BIM).
Can anybody in the know tell me, has this increased for the tax year 2013/14 or is it still £4? I can't get through to the tax helplines tonight!

On my 2012/13 tax return I paid £601 tax towards my 13/14 tax return, as well as a second payment of 601.92 in July '14. In total that is £1203.84. I've just finished my 13/14 tax return and I can't find the section in which to offset this amount against the current tax due. I assumed it would be automatically deducted so that I only have to pay £555.7 but I'm now being charged 1,759.54 without factoring in last year's payment. Can someone please clarify which section I need to fill in?

When I left my last employer, I had to leave the share scheme (SIP) and paid the administrators a significant amount of tax and NI.
This was after I had received my P45, and I never got a statement of the tax/NI split from my employer.
Now I come to fill in my tax return (prompt as always - not!), if I put the share scheme gain on the return, it tries to charge me the tax again, plus a large amount on account for 2014/15.
Any ideas how I show this? I will call HMRC tomorrow, but don't expect a speedy response.

Hi,
I am new to self-assessment and to this site so apologise if these are basic questions about filling in my 2013-14 assessment.
I am an Italian citizen and have been non-resident and living overseas since I left the UK (I have been living in the UK in the period June 2010-July 2011) until I came to the UK in July 2013. I have a UK permanent employment and I intend to take up permanent residence or intend to stay for at least two years.
As I understand it, I should be eligible for split year treatment and I need to consider two separate situations for the year: a period up to July 2013 for which I am not liable to income tax, a period from July 2013 to April 2014 for which I am liable to income tax on income paid by my UK employer.
From April 2013 till July my wife and 2 kids have been living in the UK (they have since Sept 2011) in our house of property, in the same period I made remittance on our joint UK bank account of income coming from my employer overseas on which I paid my taxes in Italy (where I was fiscally resident till July 2013).
My questions are:
1. How to request split year treatment on the self-assessment online?
2. As I will be requesting split year treatment, should the income figures that I include on the self-assessment form only be those for income I have received since returning to the UK or does HMRC expect to see income for the whole tax year? If the latter, how do I indicate the part that I received while being resident elsewhere and how do I indicate the part that should be liable to UK income tax?
3. As my employer was based overseas, should I report income received under the employment pages or under foreign income?

Hello
Doing my first assessment since being VAT registered, do I put the amount of vat I have paid in as an expense anywhere please.
If not can someone confirm that I am basically paying tax on an amount the government have already taken as far as I can see.

I am selling a property that was previously my main dwelling and more recently has been let out.
Bought house in May 2003 for £163000
Lived in house until Nov 2012
Let house out until Dec 2014
Have agreed to sell for £217000
I am a higher rate tax payer.
I estimate costs of estate agent and legal fees to about £3,500 (are these relevant to CGT calculation?)
Do I have a CGT liability? I complete a self-assessment each year to account for the rental income.

I'm self-employed and complete the HMRC self assessment form annually.
This year I'd like to calculate my tax bill before the end of my Financial Year (5 April) with a view to investing a lump sum in my pension rather than paying 40% tax on it.
Ideally, I'd like a calculator that will take into account balancing payments (I suspect that I'm entitled to a refund this year).
Can anyone recommend a good tax calculator which will give me an accurate estimate of how much tax I will owe?

Hi,
When I completed my Tax Return for 13-14, I was hit with a nasty shock.
During this time, I was employed 5 days per week all year round by two different places of employment.
I paid my taxes and had everything in place. At the time, I had noticed that only one job appeared to be contributing to my Student Loan. I sent the SLC a letter asking them to let me know if there were any discrepancies as I had expected I would pay the loan back for both employments, though had never been in that situation before, so didn't know if it was normal or not. I did not hear back, so assumed all was well and everything was in order.
After completing my tax return, it appears I have been left with a £850.00 tax bill for 'student loan'. I was expecting to owe no taxs as I had been employed at the time and it was the responsibly of my employer to pay my taxes. I had duly informed the SLC of my job circumstances and I am staggered at this large bill. I thought the SLC were supposed to pass current data on to an employer such that they knew how much to deduct from your take home pay.
I submitted my tax return with an explanation similar to the above in the notes. I am going to follow this up with a phone call in the week.
Can anyone advise me on what my options are? Obviously, I would like to pay the loan off, but being hit with such a large sum, is not only unexpected but completely unaffordable at this stage.
Your helpful suggestions would be much appreciated :beer:

Just wondering if some one could help me.
Just before christmas i received a bonus from work of £3000 and was taxed £1000, which is a fair chunk.
I earn £14,000 pa and I am paid by PAYE, so was just wondering if I would get any of this tax back?

House purchase price £155,000
House sale price £170,000
Capital Gain = £15,000
I put a £15,500 deposit down when originally buying the house. Does this mean I have no capital gains to pay? Anything else I need to take into consideration? Thanks :-)

I jointly own a buy to let flat valued at 100,000 which is nearly paid off, so there is no mortgage interest to offset against tax we both pay 40 percent tax.
Can I pay off remaining amount of mortgage and transfer ownership to my daughter who earns very little ? and is there any tax to pay ? or would it be best to remortgage? any ideas appreciated

Dear All
I just discovered that: (a) council tax bands are determined by 1991 property value; and (b) the values assigned in 1991 were not always accurate and many people have saved money by having their properties re-banded.
My situation is that my property was almost certainly worth much less in 1991 than the range indicated by its current banding. But there has been work done on the property since 1991, that certainly increased its value.
My query is: does the council tax banding depend on the *actual* value that the property had in 1991; or does it depend on its *effective* 1991 value, i.e. its *current* value with some multiplier applied to translate between 2015 and 1991? I can't find this information anywhere.
Any help would be very much appreciated! Also, apologies if I've posted this in the wrong forum!

OK I know I'm leaving it late to file my self-assessment, but I've been doing my SA online tonight and I noticed something odd about the amount that the site calculates for amount of child benefit received.
Unlike last year, the site now lets you put in the number of children you're receiving benefit for and hit the "Calculate" button and it populates how much child benefit you've received for 2013-2014. The thing I'm finding odd is that the number it calculates is £1055, which is 13 months worth of child benefit. Why is it using 13 months and not 12 months? Am I being stupid or am I right in saying that a tax year is 12 months not 13 months?
I've also been onto the government child benefit tax calculator site (https:// gov.uk / child-benefit-tax-calculator) and it gives exactly the same figure, and it also gives a figure for 2014-2015 which is based on 13 months, not 12.
I'm guessing I'm going to have to go with what it says (although you can say that the number is wrong and give the correct figure) but I just want to know why its giving a figure based on 13 months?

I have registered (in October 2014) for SA, but did not "activate" my code - so I am waiting for a new one. It is unlikely to arrive before the deadline. HOWEVER, I think I have been totally dim-witted about the whole thing. What taxation period does the January 2015 deadline apply to ? Is it Apr2013-Apr2014? If so, then I don't suppose I have to complete the form - or do I. So confused by this simple thing......
