One for ChrisMac, this: :)
Mrs P falls into one of HMRC Excluded (from filing SA online) Cases. This became obvious when the online application's calculations gave no Starting Rate Allowance to someone well within that mendacious "You can earn up to £17k and owe no tax" HMRC slogan.
So, on with the brakes and application for a paper SA100 made then submitted complete with note explaining that this application is not correctly processed online due to it falling within the Excluded cases.
Finally - finally - months later, HMRC reply - with a calculation that exactly mirrors the faulty online calculation. :(
Before someone starts shooting from the hip, I have access to the latest Beta of HMRC's fix-it-all software due for retrospective release in October - and it processes her case correctly.
You have been warned :)

I've worked for a company for 1 year and I had the option of a company car, which I took.
Last month I had my payslip and my tax code was changed and I had paid an extra £400 in tax, I called HMRC and they told me my employer never informed them I was a company car user and I owed them about £2000 in tax.
Speaking to my employer they basically said they didn't have a requirement to inform HMRC and it was my responsibility.
As you can imagine I was really angry, firstly because I've had numerous jobs with company cars and never
Have I had to inform HMRC myself I had a company car.
This extra £400 a month it enough to put me in debt everymonth, I have a wife and child to support.
Can anyone offer any advice as to whether I have any legal recourse regarding this?

Hello all
Apologies if I'm posting this in the wrong place, also apologies for what is probably quite a silly question but one I don't know the answer to!
How do I go about claiming back overpaid PAYE tax? My new employer put me on an emergency tax code last year which I rectified for my second pay check. I had thought that magically my overpaid tax from the first pay check would be automatically repaid but this has not happened. What should I do?
Thanks in advance!

Hi,
I'm recently out of work and looking for another one right now. I used to work part time (due to child care) and earn below the threshold so I don't pay tax.
I'm hoping to find another permanent part time job but if I take a temp 3 months full time job, will I be able to claim any tax back? I assumed everything (my earning and tax) will show on my next year P60 ( if I managed to get a permanent job). What happen if I'm between jobs? will the agency be the one issued the P60?
Thanks.

Hi there,
I am currently looking at wroking a second job for a short period and am really confused about the tax position.
I currently work full time at £30k a year and will be working possibly a second job at approximatly £8844 a year.
Ideally I don't want my tax on my main job to be affected in anyway, so how will i work this exactly and how much tax would i be paying on the second job?
Thanks

I try to call HMRC few days now and after a ton of useless information it says 'we cannot speak to you right now, goodbye'. How do I contact these people? Do they have email?

I have searched previous posts and could not really find an answer. I work as a Mechanic at a dealership and have done for 3+ years. I had to buy all my tools for work and as you may know tools can be very expensive.
I heard of about the tax relief for tools, I've been reading up on it and still a bit confused by the gov website, was wondering if anyone could answer me a few questions.
1) They state you can claim tax relief for "repairing or replacing small tools you need to do your job" Where as the guy who told me about it said you could do it for all your tools you've purchased, as the amount I would get back would be minimal, as I rarely need to repair/replace my tools, so if someone could clarify that would be great.
2) I bought the majority of my Snap On gear off eBay, as our local Snap On dealer is the worst dealer imaginable! I was wondering how this would effect my claim, as in how would I submit my receipts/invoices, if I'm eligible for the relief anyway.
I can't imagine they'll accept items bought off eBay as your friend could literally list an item x20 the amount it's worth, you buy it, send in the receipt and get way more than the tools worth off the rebate.

Hello
I was resident in the UK for the whole 2016/17 tax year. Over this period, I was living off my savings and looking for work (which I found in May 2017). I did have an income of just under £1,500 from doing a translation in this period, but this was the only income I had over the 2016/17 tax year.
Do I still need to file a tax return regardless?

Quick query.....
Unmarried but we have a will. Wanted to understand the process should one of us die (lovely subject!)
Do our debts get deducted from the sum of the assets BEFORE IHT is applied?
Just trying to understand if we will go over the threshold. Based on current assets it would be very close!

Hello
I was made redundant end of June 2017
On JSA during July 2017
New Job August onwards
I have submitted my P45 from my previous employer to new employer
I have also submitted my P45 from DWP after I signed off
First pay packet on emergency tax code but probably to be expected
Logged onto the tax on-line portal
Expected Income for the year includes a figure of £15000 for JSA benefit ...!
only got 3 weeks JSA so approx £200 so not sure what the hell this £15000 for JSA is ?
The rest of expected income is correct for previous & current employer but have no idea regarding the JSA figure
I would have thought the P45 I submitted feom DWP would have sorted this and the 15k must be a computer error ?
Any help / comments appreciated
Thanks Donna

I currently work in the hospitality field and am currently looking at getting my personal alcohol license to allow me to look for different career opportunities.
I am at a managerial level at my current venue and I am finding more often than not that a personal license is an essential requirment for jobs of a similar level at other venues that involve running bars or managing teams of people serving alcohol.
My question is would I be able to claim the costs of obtaining a personal alcohol license against my income tax if it was a necessity for my job or for a job that I had recently taken up and an employer was unwilling to foot the bill? Usually its around £150-300 for a 1 day course at a training centre.
Any advice would be appreciated!

A former business partnership between myself and my wife, a hair salon, closed down at the end of April 2016 when the landlord of the premises terminated the lease for development purposes. My wife ran the business and she received 100% of the profits. In the 2016-17 tax year the salon operated for 3 weeks at the end of which we had to pay out £9,000 in redundancy payment. Along with other payments required in closing down the business the partnership accounts show a loss of £11,000. My wife has subsequently moved on to being a sole trader hairdresser working from home. Within her sole trader accounts my wife has made a net profit of £15,000 for 2016-17. Can 100% of the losses from the partnership be offset against the sole trader profits? Alternatively, I have a salary of £64,000 from my work, even though I didnt receive any profits from the business in previous years, can I use any of the losses from the partnership to offset my PAYE tax?
A further income we have is through a number of BTLs we own. For 2016-17 my Wifes profits from BTLs was £15,000 and mine £8,000. Can this profit be added to my Wifes total taxable income as the starting point to offset the £11,000 loss? Alternatively can I use a proportion of the losses to offset tax?
As a further question, the partnership received £16,000 from the landlord as statutory compensation for termination of the lease, I have read that this is dealt with a capital not income so presumably this gets added to the balance sheet? When the partnership is closed down how is the balance sheet dealt with for taxation CGT?

I've been deployed overseas by my (UK) employer, just short of 6 months.
As I now prepare to return, I have a number of personal belongings I wish to post back.
Normally anything from outside the EU will incur duty on customs, so I assume I should include documentation with a sort of inventory with the goods I'm shipping back, an indication these are personal belongings posted at the time I fly back home, etc.
Any idea how I should go about this, what forms I need to fill and where to find them?
Or should I just post the items normally, pay on reception and claim reimbursement later?

Hi
I may be made redundant very soon and calculate I'll get a tax rebate if I don't get another job before the end of the tax year 17/18.
I'm also thinking of selling a property and putting a lump sum into a pension - I will get basic tax pension relief and higher tax relief in a rebate. I won't be subject to capital gains tax as it was my main residency for many years.
I also am able to claim back mileage Allowance relief.
I'm calculating that this will all add up to more than I've paid in tax. Pretty sure my calculations are correct so just want to know if this is something that can happen?
I'm hoping so and wonder if it's down to a fundamental difference between tax rebate (as having paid too much through PAYE) and tax relief (on pension contributions).
Anyone have any experience or knowledge of this?

I am trying to fill out my self assessment tax return because I earned slightly above the £50k threshold for repaying child benefit.
I have entered the taxable pay and tax deductions information from my P60. I am unsure, however, whether I need to include details of my private medical insurance. As far as I was aware the tax due on this should already be accounted for in the tax deductions shown on my P60. However, if I add in the medical insurance (around £1500 a year) to the relevant sections of the self-assessment form the amount of tax due jumps from around £20 to around £900 .
So do I include it or not?

How does it work nowadays?
When I was working before they used to give you an allowance on both income tax PAYE and National Insurance? You used to use up your allowances for the first 5-6 months of the year THEN start to pay tax as your allowances on both Income Tax and NI have been used up for that financial year.
Has things changed or still the same?

My wife and I just went to fill in our self assessment forms online and when we clicked on the link we were presented with an Error 404 - Page not found.
Looked at their online serviceability page and this reports no problems (with no update since 24/08). Further searching gives no indication of any issues.
Rang them up and (eventually) got through to be told that 'they were aware, that it had been down for days, nobody knew what the problem was and to just keep trying it each day'.
Just thought I'd let you all know.
(Used to work in IT and can't believe something this critical has been allowed to be down for days)

Hi All, first time poster so apologies if I have posted in the wrong forum.
I was made redundant in Nov16, and was not issued a p60 by my employer.
Now I would like to identify myself to HMRC and gov.uk via the website, which is asking for a specific field to verify identity from my p60:
Employees contributions due on all earnings above the PT (Primary Threshold)
I have contacted my previous employer and they have directed me to the P45 and said they wouldn't be able to issue a p60 for me.
Ultimately the goal is successfully introducing myself to the uk gov website.
Thanks

Hello,
a quick question: if i'm no longer a resident in the uk. am i still allowed a personal tax allowance and if so does that mean i would be liable for tax on the income on from rent on my house if its less than £8,000 per year.
Any advice would be grateful.

I purchased PC software (downloaded & Licence) from a US company in May 2017.
Now 4 months later, they have just sent me a request to pay them the VAT which they failed to collect at the time.
There is no explanation just a request to pay them for "VAT Compliance".
I understand VAT is payable for software downloads from Outside the EU.
I assume the HMRC have caught up with them and now they are hoping to recover their loss from customers.
Although a small sum - am I legally obliged to pay them after their error at purchase time?
